A few people have asked why I wrote Mission to Systems™.
The short answer is simple: I’ve seen too many good missions struggle quietly.
I’ve seen organizations doing meaningful work disappear. Not because the work didn’t matter. Not because the people didn’t care. But because too much depended on a few exhausted individuals holding everything together.
I’ve experienced that pressure myself.
There were times I struggled. Times I was overextended. Times I learned something and wished I had learned it much earlier.
I often found myself asking:
What would I have wanted to have on Day 1? What would have helped me in Year 1?
Those questions became part of the foundation for Mission to Systems™.
This isn't a guide to starting a nonprofit
I didn’t write this book to tell someone how to start a nonprofit.
I wrote it for people who are already doing the work.
Founders.
Leaders.
Teams.
Stakeholders.
People trying to do right by their communities, donors, teams, and themselves.
Many organizations start with passion and commitment. Those things matter. But they are not enough to carry an organization indefinitely.
Structure matters.
Systems matter.
Documentation matters.
Governance matters.
The goal is not to remove the human side of the work. It is to build an organization that does not depend on a few people being available, energetic, and capable every day.
I learned many of these lessons the hard way
There are things I wish I had done earlier.
There are resources I wish I had available in Year 1.
There are systems I wish I had built before I needed them.
I could have learned all of those lessons through failure.
But leaders can also learn from what others have already experienced.
That is one of the reasons I wrote this guide.
My hope is that fewer founders have to learn these lessons the hard way.
If Mission to Systems™ helps a leader avoid burnout, build credibility, strengthen their organization, or create something that lasts beyond them, then it has done what I hoped it would do.
The mission matters. But the systems you build determine how long that mission can continue.
